Shirley Turner Obituary

Shirley left her earthly home and entered her heavenly home on May 13. She was born on October 2, 1933 to Dan Richards and Mildred (Jolly) Richards in Wewoka, OK.

After the death of her father, she, her mother, and sister moved to Midwest City, OK to be close to family. Shirley graduated from Midwest City High School in 1951. She married John Vossen in 1952. Of this union, three children were born – Dan, Richard, and Shannon.

Shirley’s first priority was her children and family. She was a loving and devoted mom and was determined to see that her children received a college education. She was very active in all their school activities. Her unconditional love and her children’s well-being always came first. As a single mom, Shirley worked many jobs through Kelly Girl Temporary Services as a secretary/bookkeeper.

Shirley married Donald Turner in 1977. They shared a loving 30 years together until his passing in 2007. They were business partners in insurance, real estate, and commercial construction. After Don’s passing, Shirley continued to operate their LLC and their rental properties until her retirement in 2013.

When she and Don were married, they became a blended family. Don’s children and her children were never referred to as “stepchildren” for they were known as their “bonus” children. She always felt blessed by her children and their families’ love and devotion.

Shirley and Don rededicated their Christian faith in 1980. With assistance from three other couples in 1982, they became co-founders of Highland Baptist Church in Moore, OK where she was spiritually motivated by her church family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Don, both parents, and a “very special sister,” Barbara Harriman and “bonus daughter,” Gayla Turner. She will be lovingly remembered by her children Dan Vossen and wife Debra, Richard Vossen and wife Diana, Shannon Johansen and husband Kris, grandchildren - Kevin Vossen, Avy and husband Brady Redus, Adam Vossen, Krisha Johansen, Jacob Johansen and wife Tiffany, Jennifer Vossen and Nate Tuttle, Jamie Vossen and Travis Atkinson, Krissy Davila and husband Joe, “bonus children” - Craig Turner and wife Kathryn, Terry Turner and Cyndy Streets, “bonus grandchildren” - Mary and Jeff Nemcock, Matt and Amanda Turner, Kacie and Tyler Martin, Alexandra Turner and numerous great-grandchildren, extended family, and many close friends.

The family expresses sincere gratitude to Dave and Dena Evans, Shirley’s “Prayer Warriors” group, and her wonderful, loving home healthcare angels, Wanda Smith, Barbara Moakley, Teresa Marler and Sommer Farris.

A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, May 20, 10:00 a.m. at Highland Baptist Church, 2425 S.E. 4th Street, Moore, OK under the direction of John M. Ireland and Son Funeral Home and Chapel.
