John Joseph McCarthy, or as the world knew him “JJ “ age 72, of Norman, Oklahoma passed on peacefully surrounded by family on 11/11/23.
JJ was a native of Wisconsin. He was the only son of his parents Elizabeth McCarthy & John J. McCarthy. He attended Holy Name Seminary from 1965-1969 and was the top of his class…At least that’s what he told us. And don’t worry he didn’t become a Priest….but he did become a father. JJ began raising his two children Alicia and Jay “Little Jay’ McCarthy in his home state of Wisconsin.
In 1978 he moved to Oklahoma where JJ worked for General Motors as the Planning Coordinator for 27 years. Again, don’t worry, he did not build any of your cars. Instead, JJ McCarthy’s ability to see the best in people allowed him to enjoy a long career of doing what he did best, being a friend to everyone he knew.
It was here that he met the love of his life Linda McCarthy. He and Linda have been married for 43 years. JJ earned the title of husband through his love and dedication to his wife. They have made it look effortless. He became a father again as his family welcomed Linda’s two sons Tommy and Steve Powell into the mix.
JJ retired from General Motors in 1998 and the pattern of becoming a father continued. He and Linda raised their daughter Tawnni McCarthy in Norman where he enjoyed a very busy “retirement”. He helped found the Watchdog program in Norman where he volunteered for 13 years. He also did the bookwork for the Westwood golf course for 26 years. In 2010 he rejoined the Knights of Columbus as the financial secretary until 2019. During that time he served as the Grand Knight and Faithful Navigator.
He leaves with us, his wife Linda McCarthy, and his children Alicia Knigge and her husband Mark, of Waukesha, Wisconsin, Jay McCarthy and wife Jennifer, also of Waukesha, Tommy Powell and wife Staci of Slaughterville, Oklahoma, Steve Powell and wife Stephanie Hughes of Norman, Oklahoma, and Tawnni McCarthy-Klaus and husband Dillon, also of Norman. Over the years he received his biggest promotion and became “Papa” to his grandchildren, Ella McCarthy, Keira McCarthy, Evan Knigge, Finn Knigge, Brittany Powell, Brianna Matthews, John “Baby J” Klaus, Rylee Argo and Baker Matthews.
JJ is survived by his sisters Sue McCarthy-Hayes, Joanne Splinter, and Diane Koeberl.
