Judge James L. Gullett, retired Oklahoma County District Judge, passed away from this life June 14, 2022. He was born December 16, 1930, in Clinton, Oklahoma.
He was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Ben and Mary Gullett, his first wife, Glenda White Gullett, and stepson, Randall Ellyson.
After serving in the Air Force during the Korean War, he earned his law degree from Oklahoma City University law school in 1960. He went into private practice until 1965 when he was appointed a commissioner. In December 1966, he was appointed a United States Commissioner in Oklahoma City, serving the western district of Oklahoma. He resigned this position in 1971 to join the staff of Attorney General Larry Derryberry, serving as an assistant Attorney General. He resigned this position when he was chosen to be one in a group of 30 Court Administrator-Trainees in the nation. He later served as the Oklahoma County and Canadian County trial court administrator. In 1978, he was appointed Oklahoma County Special District Judge. In 1982, he ran for Oklahoma District Judge of Oklahoma County until his retirement in December 1994. In May 2022, the Oklahoma Bar Association presented him with an honorary certificate and a pin of recognition for more than 60 years membership in the Oklahoma Bar Association. Jim was a member of St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church and served as an elder in the church.
He is survived by his wife, Treva (Coe) Gullett; his children, son Jeff Gullett and wife Diane, daughters Dianna Day, and Jamie Pirrong and husband Roger Pirrong, and stepchildren Kimberly Duke and husband Randy; grandchildren Jason Day and wife Kieu, Robert Day, Cody Day, Anna Gullett, Nikki Goforth and husband Brady, Calli Pirrong, Brett Duke and wife Itzel, and Hailee Ellyson; great-grandchildren Cory Day, Lucas Day, Tilly Day, Marley Grace Goforth, Austin and Isabel Duke; sister-in-law Burnese Schultz, aunt, Marie McClain, brother-in-law and sister-in-law, Rev. Arthur Vance and Mertia Vance, and Judy McCall; and many cousins, nephews, and nieces.
A celebration of Jim’s life will be held July 2, 2022, at 11:00 am at St. Stephen’s Presbyterian Church, 2424 NW 50th St. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, 73112.
