Ernest Allen Dewitt of Moore, Oklahoma, affectionately called “Ernie” by his family and friends, passed from this life on September 30, 2022, at the age of 71. Ernie was born in Wink, Texas, on April 12, 1951, the son of Allen Morgan Dewitt and Janice Maxine (Olson) DeWees-Staib. He graduated from Wink High School with the Class of 1969, and later went on to enlist in the United States Air Force. During his time in the military, he worked in telecommunications and took several tours of Thailand, proudly and honorably serving his country for seven years.
On February 28, 1992, Ernie married the love of his life, Sherral, in a lovely ceremony in Oklahoma City. Ernie’s life was completely centered around his family. At the time of their marriage, Ernie had two daughters, and Sherral had three teenage girls who he took in as his own. All five of the girls were precious to him, and he absolutely adored his daughters. Later, when his grandchildren and great-grandchildren came along, he easily fell into the role of a sweet, loving grandpa. Ernie checked up on his grandkids often, and if Sherral didn’t know all the details of their current state of affairs, he’d login to Facebook to find out for himself. He was easygoing, kind, and humble with a heart of service for his family. If anyone he loved needed him, he’d be there in a heartbeat, no matter when or where. He never complained, always going with the flow. Throughout their marriage, Ernie and Sherral loved to travel, take cruises, and go on family vacations, creating beautiful, lasting memories in places like Cozumel, The Bahamas, Key West, St. Thomas, and Puerto Rico.
During his down time, you could often find Ernie taking it easy at home and watching football in his favorite recliner. He liked to root for the underdog and was a lifelong fan of the Dallas Cowboys, and he always had loyalty for both OU and OSU. He absolutely loved when his kids and grandkids would come over to visit, even though he would often fall asleep mid-chat – everyone understood that Ernie needed his frequent beauty rest. His dedication to his family, his humble nature, and his kindness were an inspiration to many. Ernie will be deeply missed.
He is preceded in death by his father and stepmother, Allen and Lola DeWitt, his mother and stepfather, Janice DeWees-Staib and Art Staib, and one daughter, Kandace Hill.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Sherral Dewitt, of the home; daughters, Daina Hines and husband Daren of Houston, Texas, Terri Siebert and husband Randy of Enid, Oklahoma, Amy Clymer and husband Stephen of Blanchard, Oklahoma, and April Treadwell of Moore, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren, Houston, Sydnie, Mariah, Maddy, Lola, Brianna, Brooklyn, Taylor, Joshua, and Matthew; one great-grandson, Tucker, and two great-granddaughters, River, and Kassie; one brother, David DeWitt and wife Susan of Fort Worth, Texas, and two sisters, Cheryl Wright of Anna, Illinois, and Juanita Murley of Granite, Oklahoma; along with his precious Yorkie, Sophie, and many loving nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.
