Dr. Betty Joanne Gorrell

Betty Joanne Gorrell, 83, of Moore, Oklahoma, passed away on November 18, 2022 at home with her family.

Betty was born in Oklahoma City on October 26, 1939. She graduated from Northwest Classen High School and went on to receive a Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Oklahoma Baptist University, a Master’s in Nursing Education from the University of Indiana, and a Doctorate in Adult and Higher Education from the University of Oklahoma.

Betty was married to Lee Gorrell for almost 60 years.

Betty worked as a nursing educator at Oklahoma Baptist University, Southern Nazarene University, and Oklahoma City University for about 50 years. She served as a flight nurse during the Vietnam War for the Air National Guard. She enjoyed nursing and spent two years in the Pediatric Unit of the Presbyterian Medical Center and two years at Children's Memorial Hospital. She was a member of the American Nurses Association, Oklahoma Nurses Association, and Sigma Theta Tau – the International Honor Society of Nursing. She was also actively involved in the Council Road Baptist Church.

Betty is survived by husband Lee Gorrell, daughter Kelli Gorrell, sister Jacqueline Headlee, grandchildren Morgan Montgomery, Zoe Gorrell, Holden Justus, Brittany Gorrell Watson, Forrest Gorrell, Megan Gorrell, Jordan Gorrell, great grandchild Bonnie Watson, nieces Sherry Sullivan, Jana Adams, Karen Headlee, Linda Browne, and nephew Steven Headlee.

Betty is preceded in death by her son Mark Gorrell.

The funeral service will be held at 1:30pm on Friday, November 25th at Hilltop Baptist Church in Norman, Oklahoma. Funeral arrangements are under the care of John M. Ireland and Son Funeral Home.
