Donald Godwin Obituary

Donald Royce Godwin of Norman, Oklahoma, passed away from this life on May 8, 2022, at the age of 85. Donald was born in Fort Cobb, Oklahoma, to Ollie and Stella Godwin on May 9, 1936. He attended high school in Anadarko, Oklahoma. After graduation, Donald joined the United States Marine Corps, serving as a Corporal for four years. After an honorable discharge from the military, Don went to work for the Fire Department, retiring as a Captain after 20 years of dedicated service to his community.

Don was an upbeat gentleman with a wonderfully dry sense of humor and an unwaveringly positive outlook on life. Not one to complain, Don always made the best out of any situation. He enjoyed a wide variety of hobbies from football and track when he was younger to gardening and yard work as he was raising his family. He was always planning a trip as he loved to travel, and he liked going out to the racetracks from time to time.  You could often find Don watching the news and old Westerns on TV. He was an avid reader, especially of Western novels by Louis L'Amour, and Don enjoyed frequent trips to the Norman Public Library to check out books. He liked dining out at Norman Restaurants, especially enjoying breakfast at the Sunnyside Up café. More than anything, he enjoyed time spent with family and friends. Don’s brave, caring heart, and genuine love for those in his life made a positive impact on many, and he will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him.

He is preceded in death by a son, Donny Godwin. Left behind to cherish his memory are his six children, Gerri Koszara and husband Oscar of Harrah, Oklahoma, Linda Buckley of Norman, Lea Ann Gomez and husband Mark of McLoud, Oklahoma, Jake Godwin and wife Annalisa of Abilene, TX, Jana Kennedy and husband Chris of Harrah, Oklahoma, and Gwen Godwin, also of Harrah; eleven grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; his loving companion, Doris Robertson; and his best bud, Andy.
