Catherine Rebecca Souders of Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, was called Home to Heaven on Saturday, November 11, 2023, at the age of 80. Cathy was born in Decatur, Illinois, on October 29, 1943, to Lila Ilene (Pfeifer) Schlipf and Sherman Schlipf. She married the love of her life, Jack Souders, in Shelby County, Tennessee, on April 16, 1962.
As a talented seamstress and hairstylist, Cathy honed most of her skills at American Beauty College, where she was a member of the 1972 graduating class. She liked to crochet in her free time, watch reruns of her favorite shows, or church on TV. More than anything, she loved to spend time with her family, who she treasured. Everyone was welcome at Cathy’s house, and she was a second mother to anyone who needed a little extra love. She enjoyed family get-togethers and looked forward to family reunions, but most of all, Cathy loved the quality time she spent with her husband, her daughter, her grandson and great-granddaughters.
Cathy loved listening to music and dancing. She and Jack liked to square dance and for many years, were members of the Lucky Square-Dancing Club. One of Cathy’s favorite pastimes was attending concerts with her daughter, Tammy. The pair loved country music and amongst others were able to see Randy Travis in person, as well as both of Cathy’s favorites - Conway Twitty and Loretta Lynn - all unforgettable evenings that they both loved to reminisce about. She also cherished the “girls only” road trips she took with her daughter and great-granddaughters. The ladies visited many museums together, went to Eureka Springs, Arkansas, and created beautiful memories in Dodge City, Kansas.
Cathy also loved being inspired by a good preacher. She, along with Tammy, attended several memorable revival events over the years including the revivals of Jimmy Swaggart, Donnie Swaggart, Jesse Duplantis, and Franklin Graham. Always referring to herself as a “tough old bird”, Cathy’s favorite saying was, “You can never outgive God.” To describe her as generous might be an understatement. She bought children’s clothing and toys to give away to the kids she met on mission trips, and she was constantly giving away her own clothes to anyone who she thought needed them. She and Jack also loved purchasing old bicycles and fixing them up to give to the children they encountered on their missions.
Not only was Cathy a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, she was a loving aunt, great-aunt, and a true friend. Cathy’s love for life, and more importantly, her love for others, positively impacted so many. Her light and love will be missed tremendously by all those who were blessed to have known her.
Left to treasure her memory are her husband of 62 years, Jack Souders, of the home; her daughter, Tammy McAlvain and son-in-law Kevin of Blanchard, OK; one grandson, Christopher McAlvain and his wife Melissa of Oklahoma City, OK, and two great-grandchildren, Kelsey, and Alyssa.
Cathy is also survived by her brother, Jimmy Kalin and his wife Louise of Yukon, OK, nieces Marilyn and Angel, and nephew Deshawn, niece Becky Burch and her husband Jeremy of Moore, OK, nephews Dylan and Tyler Brayton, and many dear friends.
