Carl Sossamon Obituary

Carl Lee Sossamon of Blanchard, Oklahoma, passed away from this life on January 25, 2022, at the age of 87. Carl was born in Hugo, Oklahoma, to Elmer R. and Marita Sossamon on July 22, 1934. Carl attended high school in Lelia Lake, Texas, as well as in Schultz Spring, Oklahoma. He had a rewarding career as a professional truck driver, and Carl was the proud owner and operator of Carl’s Truck and Electric. He also worked for Trans Con Trucking for ten years, as well as selling tools for Cornwell and Mac.

Carl was outgoing and funny, and the kind of guy who never met a stranger. He always had a story to tell, and his charisma was magnetic. He adored children, and they always took to him immediately, sensing his kind and gentle nature. He was a prankster at his core, and he loved to joke around with his children and grandchildren, always making them smile and laugh. He was a kind, loving man, with the most generous heart. More than anything in life, Carl loved being with his family and friends.

He enjoyed playing the banjo and guitar, and he mostly liked playing Bluegrass and Gospel music. He was a collector, as his grandson says, of “anything that wasn’t bolted down”. He collected guitars, tools, coins, belt buckles, cowboy hats, and racing magazines, amongst other things. He loved a good horse race, and he enjoyed attending the races in person and betting on the ponies. Carl also enjoyed going to auctions, especially car and truck auctions.

The Sossamon family had their own band, The Sossamon Family Band. Carl, his wife, sons, and daughter enjoyed playing at Bluegrass festivals and church functions, services, and revivals. He enjoyed watching Westerns, especially John Wayne movies, nature shows and documentaries. Carl was lucky enough to be married to the love of his life, his wife for 65 years, Tillie. They enjoyed going to church together, to family reunions, out to dinner, and taking special trips to get ice cream. He was a loving husband, father, brother, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend. Carl touched the hearts of many, and his memory will live in our hearts forever.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Tillie Evelyn Sossamon, and a daughter, Phyllis Johnson.

Carl is survived by two sons, Ricky Sossamon of Blanchard, Oklahoma, and Randy Sossamon of Oklahoma City, a sister, Laura May Phillips of Manhattan, Kansas, two grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.
