Allen Simmons Obituary

Allen Ray Simmons of Yukon, Oklahoma, affectionately known to many as “Big Al”, passed away from this life on March 20, 2024, at the age of 68. Allen was born in Lexington, Mississippi, on September 22, 1955, the son of Emmett Ray Simmons and Nila Lee (Waddle) Hensley. After graduating from U.S. Grant High School in Oklahoma City, Al went on the join the United States Navy in 1972.

A wonderful conversationalist, Big Al was highly outgoing and loved talking to people. After his time in the military, he put his gift of gab to great use, building a successful career in Sales at Mathis Brothers Furniture, a career he thoroughly enjoyed for 22 years. He had a unique ability to make people feel valued and appreciated, leaving a lasting mark on many of his customers.

In his free time, he loved being outdoors. Whether he was fishing, hunting, playing softball, or simply appreciating the beauty of nature, Big Al was just happy to be outside. He was also a passionate Sooners football fan, loved to watch St. Louis Cardinals baseball, and at some point, became hooked on the Steelers. He was a skilled billiards player and enjoyed playing classic rock songs on his guitar. He also loved action movies, and westerns. He especially enjoyed watching anything featuring John Wayne or Clint Eastwood, and in his quieter moments, loved reading Louis L’Amour westerns.

More than anything, family remained his greatest source of pride and joy. He treasured the people in his life and was never happier than when he was spending quality time with the ones he loved. He especially enjoyed cooking for his family - his Sunday morning breakfasts and fish-fry feasts were legendary. Big Al’s genuine warmth, kindness, and generosity profoundly impacted everyone fortunate enough to know him. He will forever remain in our hearts as a beacon of light, reminding us to savor each day and find delight in the simple pleasures that bring us together. He will be tremendously missed.

Big Al is survived by his lifelong partner, Sharon Simmons; four children, Tiya Christine Frame of Norman, OK, Norvin Ray Simmons and wife Lynsey Renee Simmons of Oklahoma City, OK, Zachary Tyler Simmons of Piedmont, OK, and Laura Anne Simmons of Oklahoma City, OK; seven grandchildren, Kaitlyn, Karter, Preston, Lucas, Bentley, Grant, and Eva; his siblings, Rena Aldridge and husband Joe of Yukon, Donna Simmons, Dina Lopez, and Michael Simmons, all of Texas, Toni Jo Tilley of Guthrie, and Mick Kendrick of  Denver.
