Mary Diaz, 95, was a mother, wife, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, daughter, and friend during her very long life. Her life’s journey came to an end on Wednesday, March 27th, at her home. She died of natural causes.
She was born the 6th of 9 children to Antonio and Guadalupe Castillo in Anadarko, Oklahoma, in 1928. She loved her rural Caddo County childhood and especially loved her family.
She moved to Oklahoma City and attended the St. Anthony nursing school. She married John Diaz in 1950 and remained his wife until his death in 1995. Together they raised five children and lived in southside Oklahoma City. She retired after more than 40 years as a surgical nurse from St. Anthony Hospital. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and loved music and reading. Her love for George Strait was well-known. She attended music concerts, festivals, the state fair, and family get-togethers.
She is preceded in death by her husband, John, an infant daughter, Mary Ann, and by her parents, five brothers, and two sisters.
She is survived by son John Diaz of OKC, son Eddie Diaz of OKC, son Jerry Diaz and his wife Tammy of OKC, daughter Tricia Diaz and her wife Glenda, daughter Mary Lou Sanderson and her husband Ron of Glenpool. She leaves behind grandson Daniel Sanderson and partner Rhane of Tulsa, grandson Tony Diaz and partner Willa of NYC, grandson Matt Diaz of OKC, and grandson Stephen Sanderson and wife Raven, and great-granddaughters Audrey and Eliza Sanderson of Tulsa.
She is also survived by her sister, Adela Hernandez of Plant City, Florida, as well as several favorite nieces and nephews, and cherished other family members and friends. She also leaves behind family and close friends in Monterrey, Mexico, and Leon, Mexico.
